Our summer concert this year promises to be a very enjoyable mixture of music mostly in a lighter vein.
Among the pieces we will be singing is the Pied Piper of Hamelin, a medieval legend from the German town of Hameln, which tells of the abduction of all the children of the town by a piping rat catcher. The poet Robert Browning turned the story into a rather charming light-hearted poem which was then set to music by C. Hubert H. Parry.
The programme also comprises a selection of songs from the well-known musical West Side Story, a number of short songs composed by the Beatles and Gershwin, and the following 4 opera choruses:
March of the toreadors from Carmen (Bizet)
Chorus of enchanted islanders from Alcina (Handel)
Triumphal scene from Aida (Verdi)
Chorus of the Hebrew slaves from Nabucco (Verdi)
Anna le Hair will play a selection of Gershwin songs arranged for piano by the composer:
I'll build a stair way to paradise.
